When setting up your account with Connect, it is important to provide a number that can be successfully hosted on Twilio. Some types of numbers and cellular providers are not compatible with Twilio’s hosting services. This article explains which numbers can and cannot be hosted, and why it's important to use a compatible number.
Numbers That Cannot Be Hosted on Twilio
- Google Voice (VoIP): Google Voice numbers are associated with a Voice over IP (VoIP) service, which is not supported by Twilio's hosting capabilities.
- Cell Phones: Standard cell phone numbers from providers such as Verizon and AT&T cannot be hosted on Twilio. This is because Twilio’s services are designed to work with specific types of VoIP numbers rather than traditional mobile numbers.
Numbers That Can Be Hosted on Twilio
- RingCentral (VoIP): RingCentral is a VoIP service that can be hosted on Twilio. If you encounter any issues, contacting Twilio’s host team for assistance with the carrier partner might be necessary.
- Nextiva (VoIP): Nextiva numbers are generally supported by Twilio. In some cases, you may need to reach out to Twilio’s host team to ensure proper configuration and to facilitate communication with the carrier partner.
- Ooma (VoIP): Ooma numbers are compatible with Twilio, though similar to Nextiva, you may need to work with Twilio’s host team to address any potential delays.
- Xfinity/Comcast: Numbers from Xfinity or Comcast are supported by Twilio’s hosting services.
Why Some Numbers Cannot Be Hosted
Twilio's platform is optimized for VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) numbers, which are designed to work within their system for reliable and efficient service. Traditional cell phone numbers from major providers like Verizon and AT&T do not align with the technical requirements of Twilio's hosting infrastructure. This mismatch can lead to issues such as failed registration or disrupted service, which can complicate the onboarding process.
